Week 9 - Assignment #3
DIBELS is an acronym for Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills, which happens to be a set number of agendas that gauge a child's literacy and comprehension skills. These agendas consist of recognizing initial sounds, naming the letters of the alphabet, segmenting words into phonemes, reading nonsense words, oral reading of a passage, retelling, and word use.
Meanwhile, the QRI-5 method also deals with assessing a students' reading and comprehension skills in conjunction with keeping track of their ability (or lack of) to recall information given to them in the course of the reading exercise.
While both the QRI-5 and DIBELS methods are similar in that they both are assessment procedures used to individually gauge a student's literacy and comprehension skills, they at the same time differ because the QRI-5 method allows the student to research answers to literacy and comprehension questions given to them, while the DIBELS method (despite being very effective in its own right in assessing a students' strengths and weakness in literacy and comprehension) doesn't.
However, the way both of these methods can be used in a classroom setting can come into play whenever a teacher notices one of his or her students experiencing reading and comprehension problems and uses either assessment procedures to get them back on track academically in a one-on-one setting.
This can all be achieved through having the students read short-stories,reciting songs, or poems in class to name a few.
